Looks like thunderstorms coming on Tuesday, but by Thursday there'll be a change.

From NWS Forecast Discussion:

High pressure will be in control at the surface beginning
Thursday and for several days fostering drier and cooler
conditions for late this week into early next week. Highs will
drop from the 70s and 80s Wednesday to the 60s and 70s which is
more in line with normal values for this time of year.

Precipitable water values generally drop below 0.60" or less
than 50% of the climatological normal during this time so there
should be some nights when we will see ample radiational cooling
as the high shifts closer overhead. Overnight lows will drop
into the 40s and 50s with some chilly mornings in the higher
elevations. This will be the first taste of fall for many
places.

Probably just a coincidence, but a couple days ago I finally got tired of looking at my old Karavan sled trailer that I retired three years ago after a spring collapsed. The metal pad on the axle that supports the spring had rusted out, so it's been sitting out back and rusting since then. I put it up on sawhorses and discovered that the trailer looks surprisingly good underneath, so a repair may be happening. A stretch of cool, dry weather may provide the energy needed to get it back on the road, as well as some other projects that need doing. Two weeks of cool weather and I might establish some bragging rights, although that isn't likely.

Saturday morning (September 2) was our first frost for the season in Loudon. We had a low of 34° at 6:00am on two thermometers. The sensors for those thermometers are about 6' above ground level and very near the house. Out in the gardens it got cold enough to blacken the leaves on squash and sweet potato plants, and our vehicles and lawn had a coating of frost.  Yep, got to call it the first frost for Fall-2017, and the earliest frost in several years. Whitefield Airport recorded 32° Saturday morning, so I'd guess the gardens up there are gone.

Tax Day, sleet, freezing rain, and snow.

It will be better tomorrow.

4:00 Edit: It may well be better tomorrow, but today ain't over. Look at the right-hand side of the bottom picture in this post. That tall pine just to the left of the portable shed is now down on the ground. Wind is gusting to about 30 mph out of the east. Tree snapped 15 feet up, so there's about 70 feet on the ground.

I guess I needed another project. I'll be the Kindling King.

The consensus weather forecast was for snow/rain and clouds today, and the sky this morning did give warning. Turned out to be a false alarm.

I was a bit late to pick up the best colors, but not too bad.

Should be close to 90 today, but there's this for the weekend from the NWS.

Frost possible...particularly in the northern valleys Saturday night.

This thread has been dormant for a couple years, so I'll try to revive it.

First item is a weather underground report of current North American snow cover:

https://www.wunderground.com/news/storms/winter/news/2018-10-15-largest-middle-october-snow-cover-13-years-north-america

Next,

Last night the wind blew hard enough to send our big gas grill across the deck and down some stairs. It's a total. Power was out in my area for about 3200 houses.. Cold air has moved in, and the NWS is speculating about a possible snowstorm in the next week. In the NWS forecast discussion, the word "cyclogenesis" (intensification of a low pressure storm system) is used twice . The abbreviations below are tough to figure out, but it seems to involve changes in the jet stream and something called shortwaves (S/WV's) that can cause precipitation.

"with plenty of colder than normal air in place and the positive PNA pattern supporting Nrn stream S/WVs potentially interacting with the subtropics...the pattern is ripe for East Coast cyclogenesis. Perhaps significant cyclogenesis. And if we are going to dig a little deeper...ECMWF EPS individual members are supporting low pressure late next week...and roughly 1 in 5 members has the first snowfall of the season for locations in Nrn New England. Food for thought."

Sorry about your grill, but on a good note I did see a few stray flakes falling earlier this morning. Currently cloudy, 39° and breezy here.

It's fair to say that the snowfall was spotty. Some got it, some didn't. Here's what the NWS got for reports. In Loudon, about 4" of snow and considerable ice. Would be a great base, but I don't think it will last.

The NWS forecast is now leaning towards snow coming for south/central NH. It's still a Mass storm, but southern NH should get a good share. Cold air is settling in, should be close to zero tonight with little warmup for a couple days, so any precipitation should be snow. Still a lot of open water around.. Best bet around here (Concord area) would probably be a rail trail.

After plowing my driveway I decided to take my 570 Panther out to see how it ran. It's been a long time since we've had so much , about 18"-20", around Concord. The sled seemed to operate more like a submarine, even with the extra-wide skis. It will take a considerable amount of sled traffic to pack these trails.

If you got 18 inches of snow there, that's good. I just came in from clearing my driveway, got maybe 14 inches here.

We ended up with 20"

Don't know if you've seen this. Note the times that readings were given to NWS. Cocorahs, COOP, and Trained spotter are volunteers who have received training from NWS. Public are, well, much like you and I. The types who measure snow on the leeward side of our house using a wooden yardstick we got from our heating fuel company. Broadcast media are just what you'd think. However it was measured, some places got a lot of snow. Bad luck for Coos County.
