  1. Checking In

Been quiet around here, hope everyone is doing well. Been a very hectic couple of months for me, finally getting out from under everything. Took my last ride of the season this year in March, with BigGuyNH, we had a great day cruising the Baker River and surrounding area trails. About that time, it became evident that my daughter’s marriage was not going to survive. They had been married for seven years, and struggling for several months. I thought they would be able to get things straightened out, but it wasn’t to be. Couldn’t say what really happened, they have chosen not to share too much, but it seems that my son-in-law was just too unhappy to stick with it. My daughter wanted to try to get back in track, but he seemed to have given up, for reasons I don’t fully understand. They have a little girl, who will be three in a couple of weeks, and another on the way. Long story short, she moved in with us, along with our grand-daughter, and their german shepard in March, while seven months pregnant. We like the dog, but never had one of our own, and wasn’t looking forward to having a 95 pound animal in the house, but you do what you have to do. Spent most of March and April moving her stuff out of their house, while it was for sale, some of it into our house, rest into storage, meanwhile trying to get her settled, helping our granddaughter get used to a new living arrangement, along with the dog (the dog was harder). She had her baby in early May, so now we have another little one in the house, which is great in a number of ways, but I have to say we had become accustomed to being empty-nesters. Normally, after my last ride of the season, the sleds get cleaned, lubed, and anything that needs to be done for next season taken care of, and they get tucked into the trailer for the summer. That didn’t happen until last weekend, and I still have not had time to clean up the trailer (hopefully this weekend). My granddaughter is a pretty good sidekick, took a trip to the nursery last weekend to buy flowers, then ‘helped’ me work on the sleds. She is much more interested in playing with cars and trucks than dolls and princess stuff, and is happy to be outside with her tools, and helping to plant the flowers. Finally getting caught up on my springtime chores. Our daughter has found a house, which is being built over the summer, so they will be with us until the fall, then she should be moving into her own place, about 10 miles away. Not going to be easy as a single mother with two under four years old, hopefully she will be able to manage with some help from us. Here are some pics of our newest granddaughter, and my sidekick helping with the sleds last weekend.
  2. Checking In

Yup - we will need to try to get in a ride earlier in the season this year. Finally got to add a few pics above...
  3. Craziest thing you've ever done for a snowmobile?

Yup, nice country up there. You just have to live to tell the story.
  4. Craziest thing you've ever done for a snowmobile?

Cool, although I can't do those kamakasi runs like that. I would fall asleep for sure. So - that's two new red sled on the same day, in May no less.
  5. Godspeed Jim Herbert

'after a lengthy illness' It's difficult when someone goes suddenly, from the perspective of closure, but I hate the idea of suffering for a long time. I hope that wasn't the case for him. 57 years married is an accomplishment, I hope I get there. RIP
  6. Fire at Murray Farm

I have been in that building, it is really a shame to see this. David (he prefers David) - my name is David as well, but I'm fine with either - I hope you can save most of it, and you are better them most at making lemons from lemonade, I hope everything turns out well.
  7. No new posts since 3/21/19

You can like posts here... I check the sledding spots on Facebook from time to time, but I agree it is much harder to follow, and there is substantially more crapola there. I'm happy to stick with the grownups here, even if there are fewer of us.
  8. Lowes garage to Errol and back

Did they stop selling gas at Lowes? We filled up there a couple of times this season, last time was in late February.
  9. Off Topic

I wonder if a 'Test drive' was a semi-annual event for this guy, so he didn't have to buy a truck of his own? Towing a boat is not something I would let someone do on a test drive, I bet she did not know that is what he intended. The owner of the truck got her money from the insurance company, so I guess she comes out OK. It will be interesting to see what the court finds. If this were a more typical accident (If he crashed into her truck with his), her insurance would have paid her the money, but would they then go after the guy to get it back? If he had insurance, his company may pay hers, but if he doesn't it is really unclear to me. Things vary from state to state, here in Mass, I have Uninsured motorist coverage, that may come into play here if he had no coverage.
  10. Official 2019 riding pic thread

Been meaning to add some pics here for a while. Rode out of Baker River with BigGuyNH today, had a great ride. First time to the Rocket for him. Had lunch at the Mountain View with our wives a few weeks back. Best front porch in New England, at least. Getting ready to head out with our group in Early February, in Gorham. Fayban's for lunch on a different day. Just a trail shot I liked. Probably done for this year, unless the cold holds for a few more weeks, got in more trips and miles than average for me.
  11. Something to think about

You might be able to pay for insurance up front when you rent it, like when you rent a car. Otherwise, you crash it - you bought it. I would guess that the reported rate of accidents is higher. Lots of people don't insure their sleds. In a relatively minor accident - broken plastics, bent A-arms, etc, and no or minor injury, the sled probably gets driven or towed off the trail, and the accident is never reported. This has happened to one of my sleds. Rentals are one way to introduce new people to the sport, which is a good thing, especially if they have a good experience. I rented one years ago, but don't remember much about the training, who knows what they tell people now.
  12. Saturday?

Going to try again, hoping to ride somewhere south of Franconia Notch, Saturday or Sunday, Anyone available while there is still snow? Thanks.
  13. Saturday?

Hoping to ride Saturday. Had a plan, but my partner had to change plans. Would be happy to meet most anyplace south of Franconia Notch. Anyone available?
  14. Saturday?

Sorry for your loss. Maybe next week.
  15. Snow Totals

Got about a foot down here where its useless.
  16. GSX550f

I think it is. Make sure the parking brake is not on. Get the sled on the stand, give it a little gas and let off. Track should coast a bit, and you should be able to move it by hand. Welcome to the forum.
  17. Snow Totals

    Yay!
  18. GSX550f

The muffler/pipe is on that side, isn't it? Could that be what you are feeling?
  19. Arctic Cat 660 question - Check Engine light

Could it have been hot? Riding slow with passengers could have overheated, not enough snow to the coolers. You take it for a quick spin after it cools, don't find a problem. Left side driveshaft bearing is usually good for about 5000 miles. but it could be bad if it was never greased. There is a fitting down there, behind the clutch. When the bearing is failing, the speedo will stop working, often the magnet the trips the sensor will be knocked off.
  20. Official 2019 riding pic thread

I think that is where we turned around as well.
  21. Official 2019 riding pic thread

The trail the continues past the rocket is nice as well. Old rail bed for a while, then some fields, and more typical trails. Have only ventures about 20 miles or so past the rocket, need to go farther one of these days.
  22. Official 2019 riding pic thread

There is a trail on the right, just south of the rocket (forget the number) that goes into Lincoln. Great trail, lots of elevation changes. Have gone from Baker River up to Lincoln for coffee at the Dunkin, then back to Baker River. Sorry Catreserve - too lazy to carry our own coffee, even though that is probably a smarter choice.
  23. F&G CO's help stuck snowmobilers in Colebrook

You do need to use some judgement with a GPS, But - They also could have had a map from a past season, and followed that into the same situation. Sounds like an unfortunate mistake, that had a good ending.
  24. Parking at Whale Tale Waterpark

Rocket is on 5 in Warren, can't miss it when you get close. Cluibhouse is on Corridor 8. The the street address is 197 N Dorchester Rd, Wentworth,.
  25. Parking at Whale Tale Waterpark

I agree. If I park there and go in to change, we usually pick up a map, and each of us puts a 5 in the jar, buy a raffle ticket if they have some.
