pathfinder got a reaction from snorander in Locals Shine at Eagle River Vintage Worlds Championship
In a time where everything seems to be going sour across the country, a story of moderate success for a 26 year old vintage racer from Lancaster is making a lot of people smile. Lucas Nast, who made the front row starting position in the final of the Vintage World Championships last year, went out on his own with building and taking on a lot of financial burdens that come with racing at Eagle River. Derby track. Squeaking through five or six rounds of qualifiers, last round, missed it by one place. Last Chance Qualifier was taking the last two sleds to start on the back row. Lucas qualified in the last spot for the 10 lap final, which found him finishing in 7th place at the end. A remarkable feat for a young independent racer.

Beautiful sled. I'm officially jealous, Nothing like new Iron reliability.
However, I'm amazed you so casually gave up the financial advantages of vintage plates, kinda like forever stamps.
We will also miss the blow by blows of your meticulous maintenance of your old friends, with pics.
    Seriously, very happy for you.

Just below Pittsburg village is a stretch of the Connecticut River that has seen a lot of kayaks and canoes over the years. Having done this stretch with rookies hundreds of times, it was a shock to see the the current "non depth" of the river. Pics were taken yesterday afternoon, and the y tell a story no one wants to here.

All the Connecticut Lakes and Francis are very low for this time of year. I have talked to people who have kayaked East Inlet with difficulty, due to low levels.  Most big rain generating storms have gone below us all summer. Personally,  I had a bad experience in a small pond behind my house where I had 30 Rainbow Trout, as pets, die due to lack of oxygen, from low water flow from the mountain behind me. Walked up to feed them one day and 22 of them were doing the back stroke. Never seen a drought so bad in 25 years living here. Hope we get some substantial rain soon........

There has been a recent up surge in people posting "junk" from overseas and in different languages that is becoming a big problem. This morning we had about 20 posts advertising how to buy many different prescription drugs on line that were deleted as soon as they were discovered.  As one of the original moderators of this site it has always been kind of boring with not much happening that required moderation of any kind. Recently starting to see a lot of stuff from Russia among others.  Have no idea who or what would have much to gain about posting on a snowmobile site with crap that no one here is interested in. Another issue that is not as obvious of late, is the members joining under funky names and e mail addys, that are removed amost every morning.
Apologies to all legit members for having become exposed to this stuff, before we can clean it up. We will continue to scan often and take steps to eliminate sources of this material and these  phony memberships that demean the quality of our  valuable site.
Any comments or questions about whats going on can be posted here, or messaged to me personally.

    Thanks

Most motor sports have a shrine quality “Mecca” that holds annual World Championships.  Daytona, Indy, have cars covered, and Vintage Snowmobile racers recognize Eagle River Wisconsin as the pinnacle of competition in their sport.  This writer has had the privilege of being there with locals, Chet Hooper of Pittsburg, and his driver Spencer Landry (formerly of Pittsburg) in 2018-19, which turned out to be one great experience.  Eagle River boasts a half mile, banked, dedicated track, with heated grand stands. It is a true test to the ability of man and machine in this unique sport. The World’s Championship complex exudes racing tradition going back to the beginning of the sport in the late 60’s and early 70’s, and is hallowed ground to most racers of the sport. Prior attempts to qualify for the final Championship race saw progress; the team got very close to qualifying for the final, but never quite made it.  The fraternity of racers from all over the world makes this a venue that few people get a chance to experience over the three day event, covering 90 plus classes.

In 2020-21, things changed with a complete re build of the Arctic Cat Mod 440 by team leader Chet Hooper of Pittsburg, and the addition of new driver from Lancaster, Lucas Nast.  Lucas, in his early twenties, had been racing locally with great success, and jumped at the chance to make the trip to compete at the highest level with Chet.  2021 brought them closer to their goal with a great machine and high hopes. The event was held January 8 through the10th, 2021.Qualifications are handled on the track, solo, against the clock, going only two laps.  Very few people make the cut.  Participants who make the cut move on to the quarter finals, semi finals, and Last Chance Qualifiers. The ten machines lined up for the final race, with two others in the second row who get there from the LCQ compete in the final race.  Lucas Nast was one of those in the front row who exhibited an amazing feat of skill and guts.  Being in the top ten snowmobile racers in the world is no small accomplishment, and watching him compete online against the best was a real show.  Lucas was entered in several racing classes, including the 800cc class heats with a 440cc that he came close to winning.

The Final Race was staged on Sunday afternoon and was a real production, including an invocation of a local minister with words of wisdom and encouragement.  The line up by the flag man was precise. The flag dropped   for the start! Twelve machines all heading for turn one created quite a dramatic scene of speed, position and courage. Lucas, aboard Arctic Cat #67, fought with the best in the world and finished 10th.Tune in again next year. It should be interesting.

Should be a good time! For once I can ride from my house to the starting point without having to trailer. There is another vintage ride through Franconia Notch from Whales Tail on March 7th, so the Vintage World is busy. The quality of sleds on these rides are approaching museum quality and are incredible to see in a big group. I have a few sleds to choose from, but I think I'll take my 73 Nitro that has been stretched from stock 116 inch track to a 136 inch. Fun to ride but has so much traction you don't want to hit the throttle too early coming out of a corner, as the skis lift real ez  with all that extra bite.

pathfinder got a reaction from Skip in With the increase in registration costs, how many have already registered
I just mailed off two vintage registration applications to Concord, for my principal vintage rider ( 73 Rupp Nitro 440) and a backup sled (90 Arctic Cat Prowler 440) these carried lifetime app fees of $129. each (up from $50. each). Happy to do it, looking forward to whatever riding will be possible, and worried about the future of people holding back feeding the mechanism that makes it all possible. Lot's of 0's in the pipeline of people that are necessary that have to come from somewhere to keep it going. Same with clubs and what keeps them going while too many people are sitting on the fence waiting for the "perfect storm" to enable them the "perfect ride".   Think about the future of the sport, for what doesn't enter the "piggie bank" this year will affect the system next year....

Pic doesn't look photoshopped and if you look close you  can see something like a door mat sticking out of track towards the rear window. Even more interesting is how in hell did they get it up there? And how the hell are they going to get it down? People are always getting creative moving sleds around, as we see pics of people stuffing a sled into a car trunk, three sleds in a pickup. In the early 70's I can remember myself and two buddies  stuffed two Rupp Nitros nose first into a Dodge B200 van, one each behind the seats, put a 2x6 across the seats and piled  a 634 Sno Jet in backwards, track on the 2x6 and went a couple hundred miles to ride somewhere in VT late season.

Had the privilege of meeting Sabrina and her team in '18 at the Vintage World Championships in Eagle River WI. She is amazing on the track, which she proved at Eagle River this year by being the first female ever to qualify for the front row in the Championship Finals where she finished 9th. She is someone who is obviously going to continue her rise to the top in the racing world.

pathfinder got a reaction from Saluda in What's the story with these trees
Talked to several loggers over the years about that very stand of trees, and most of them tell me it is a "modified" strip cut.  Meaning, rather than do a total strip cut of an area, you cut a a geometric pattern an an attempt to allow the trees that are left to naturally re-sead the cuts between them. Most of us have noticed typical "strip cuts" that are visible from higher elevations.   Although these "V" shaped  stands of trees have not been allowed to re-sead the open areas between them, over time, most local people have noticed seedlings popping up in these areas and eventually mowed down. So it appears that originally a large stand of trees were harvested with the intent of having them re-sead the spaces between the holes, and somewhere along the line, that intent was abandoned.  Now we have a conversation piece to talk about, but this logic seems of the self planting maneuver seems pretty sound. don't know how long ago that stand was cut, but I started riding up here in '84 and it was that way then as far as I can remember.   Great topic! Hope this helps.

Had a 90 Polaris Indy 500 liquid advertised on CL, and found a buyer from the Lakes Region. Had to work until 5 yesterday and he came up and was due here around 8-8:30. At 8:15 I get a text that he is stuck at the end of my road. ( Hey! It's Pittsburg, people get stuck all the time, Right!) Text him back, On my Way. Grab a tow strap and off I go. Get to the end of the road and find out he's not stuck, but driving a small Chev pickup two wheel drive and just can't make the hill. Have him and his lady friend jump in my truck and head to the house, show him the sled, which he loves, pays me, and then try and figure out the best way to get it the .8 mile to his waiting pickup. I have a two place with a 1 3/4 in tongue, and currently have a 2" ball on my truck. He says no problem, "why don't we tow the sled to his truck with my wheeler (a 500 one lunger Quest). Now he and his lady friend are dressed in sweat shirts, no gloves, no hat's.  Long story short both of them pile onto the non running Indy and off we go on an extremely arctic, evening cruise down an icy, snow covered, dirt road, moving pretty good on hills or it would spin. Finally get to the last obstacle, long downhill with his truck at the bottom, crawling down for fear the sled was going to tap me from behind. By this time my two shadows in the night were about popsicled out, but happy we all survived. Made it, loaded the sled into the pickup and sped back home, hoping my face would not fall off as I found a new appreciation for my wood stove.  Got a text thanking me for my help and suggested he had a friend that might want another sled I have and if he came back he would bring a film crew so we might make an episode of "Rediculousness". Pittsburg, gotta love it.........
