Thank you for contacting my office about federal funding for transportation programs that support bicycle and pedestrian activities. I appreciate hearing from you about the positive impact of these initiatives on our communities.



The thousands of miles of multi-use recreational trails on federal, state and private land in New Hampshire are a critical economic resource for our state. For example, according to a Plymouth State University study, our snowmobile trails have a positive economic impact of approximately $1.2 billion on our state each year. Furthermore, access to trails for walking, biking and skiing helps build safer, healthier communities.



I have repeatedly voted to safeguard the federal programs that make these community transportation initiatives possible, including the Transportation Enhancement program, the Recreational Trails Program and the Safe Routes to School Program. As the Senate continues debate on the surface transportation reauthorization bill, I will fight on behalf of these programs and their recreational and safety activities, in the hope that they will continue to receive the appropriate support that they deserve.
