If you think it might be electrical you need to check for bad plugs, plug wires, or even a cracked coil. Take a spray bottle of water and lightly spray the plugs, wires and coils while the sled is running. If there is a problem you'll hear the motor start skipping and if it's bad enough you'll even see it sparking where the problem is. I have had sleds with bad spark plug wires, and even a cracked coil. Good luck, Intermittent problems are a PITA to find.

Why would any one subject a good snowmobile to the environmental changes in an enclosed snowmobile trailer cap?

the hot to cold temperature changes make it a very wet damp environment
I'd beg to differ, I've never found excessive signs of moisture inside the trailer. Whats the difference between a hot stuffy shed and the enclosed trailer, not much other than no rodents. Either way I fog the cylinders and crack the oil and gas caps lose. I agree with Old Thumper beats the hell out of a pallet and a tarp any day. I cringe when I see someones sled sitting outside in the grass with just a cover or a tarp.

The land I ride in my own area is private property that I have permission from the people that own it.
If you have permission you might want to get it in writing and keep it with you as that is the only way to not get a ticket.

I have a enclosed trailer also and I screw a piece of 2x4 down over the slots where tie down bars go to keep mice out.Works good.

Now you got me wondering if mine is as sealed as I thought. i guess I'll have to look after it stops raining.

I bought a white cap specifically to minimize summer heat, but for a black trailer you could cover with a grey or silver tarp.
I don't think a clam shell trailer is as sealed as an enclosed trailer. As for putting a tarp over it I wouldn't bother, if it wasn't really tight the wind might scratch the hell out of the paint. Just leave the roof vent open a bit and you'll be fine.
