If you have never done this trip up the lakes I would suggest going with some one who knows the way! There are a lot of tricky spots with thin ice, pressure ridges and open water. I have done this trip at least a dozen or more times and still very cautious about it. If you get caught in a snow storm or fog you will loose your land marks and could get into real trouble. BE CAREFULL!!

    X2!
Been out there in White out conditions and at night and its easy to go into the wrong cove or hit open water! There was a story We told newbies to the "Lake crossing" about the Man we called
"chainsaw" from Errol Hill. He led a troop of weary travelers into the Rapid River one night on the promise of leading them "safely" to Rangley by way of the Lake!
THEY NEVER MADE IT! And We all watched in Horror as they pulled up the Sleds on Channel 8 news! He had called them up to report the "incident"!
Anyway, I would never atempt it without a "reliable" Guide and a gps too! :good:

    GOOD LUCK! :drinks:

Given the lack of cooperation from Mother Nature, this whole thing may be a bust. Might as well reciprocate with South Carolina for the amount on snow in all three states.

Anyone think that there might be a chance of moving the weekend back a couple weeks, or simply adding another (kind of a moot point for the first one anyway)

Hoping I'm wrong about the lack of open trails...

Lets reciprocate with Alaska.....they got it!
Alaska town tries to dig out after three weeks of relentless snow
Officials said at least three buildings have collapsed or partially collapsed and six homes are deemed severely stressed by heavy wet snow.

    By Rachel D'Oro, Associated Press / January 9, 2012

In this Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 photo provided by the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, a man stands on a house buried in snow in the fishing town of Cordova, Alaska. Residents have turned to the state to help them dig out of massive snow levels that have collapsed roofs, triggered avalanches and even covered doors, trapping some people in their homes.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

.Cordova is used to snow, but not like this season's blanketing.

The Guard reported more than 18 feet (5.5 meters) of snow has fallen in the past weeks, although the National Weather Service did not immediately have a measurement. :yahoo:
Apperently they didn't have a long enough ruler for the Job! L.O.L. :drinks:
