Just curious if the locals think the lakes are safe yet?

I know I saw tracks going across Lake Francis New Years eve weekend and thought who ever did it was nuts..

What about first lake?

Safe and "been on it", are two totally different things. Just don't let go of the flipper until you're on the other side.

Hopefully someone has measured the ice recently. This warm-up doesn't help any.

Having kids keeps me off until I know they're safe.. And yes safe and been on it is different.. Hence why I asked if they're safe... :drinks:

A friend of mine took 5 measurements of 1st lake last friday,
he said 4 inches of ice at best, YET there were sleds riding the lake as he drilled holes.

Thanks for this information.. So its very close to being safe then according to what you posted and what I found online:

http://www.mass.gov/.../ice_safety.htm
5" Snowmobile or ATV

http://www.mass.gov/.../dfw/dfwice.htm
3" Group, in single file

Of course I wouldn't want to go near any inlets out outlets for a while still.

On the other side of the coin, as me & the misses were heading south on 19 yesterday we saw several sleds had taken a ride out on to the north end of Silver Lake in the afternoon (no tracks there when we went north in the morning). Both sleds quickly turned around and came back ashore apparently due to soft conditions as both sled tracks had filled with water!

Same goes for the northwest end of Ossipee Lake, still open water and plenty of gray ice only a couple of hundred feet out from shore....thank gosh none of the local throttle jockies have attempted the crossing over to the east side yet!

I am sure there are some safe bodies of water scattered about, but at least in central NH a lot of the usual spots are still very tricky, to say the least.
