I haven't done that trip in years. Have fun and take lots of pics to share with your friends at SledNH.

If you have never done this trip up the lakes I would suggest going with some one who knows the way! There are a lot of tricky spots with thin ice, pressure ridges and open water. I have done this trip at least a dozen or more times and still very cautious about it. If you get caught in a snow storm or fog you will loose your land marks and could get into real trouble. BE CAREFULL!!

X2!
Been out there in White out conditions and at night and its easy to go into the wrong cove or hit open water! There was a story We told newbies to the "Lake crossing" about the Man we called
"chainsaw" from Errol Hill. He led a troop of weary travelers into the Rapid River one night on the promise of leading them "safely" to Rangley by way of the Lake!
THEY NEVER MADE IT! And We all watched in Horror as they pulled up the Sleds on Channel 8 news! He had called them up to report the "incident"!
Anyway, I would never atempt it without a "reliable" Guide and a gps too! :good:

GOOD LUCK! :drinks:

The rapid river part is the most dangerous, no doubt, i go no where near the mouth of that beast.
the rapid river drops over 200 feet in elevation from the lower richardson, its always moving!

That story doesnt surprise me, although it gives me the "willies"

Getting lost on a lake is bad news

Not a lake I would screw around on. My relatives have two camps on the north shore just east of Sturtevant Cove and they have all sorts of stories. We snowmobiled into camp many years ago and it was scary when you are out there in the middle. Help is a long ways away. When we had PWC we took them up into Rapid River some...at headway speed. We had fun exploring that lake. I love it up there.

I thought you could pick up a trail near Sunday cove, avoiding going near the Rapid river and it's unpredictable currents. No?

No the trail is after Sunday Cove Heading North I believe it is called the Carrige Rd.

I know of the Carry Road, but that is quite a ways up the river. But the Carry road would make sense since it takes you up to pond on the river.

I recall getting pretty nervous following a guy on Aziscohos in a snow storm years ago. Talk about reduced visability and nothing around you. Those big lakes all demand knowledge.

It is very easy to get disoriented even if it is not snowing on a moonless night. You lose all points of reference.

Done it twice this year already. When heading north just stay far right in the channel between upper and lower Richardson lakes.

If you have mapsource, commect your gps to computer with a usb cable. Use the upload button in mapsource. Select tracks to upload.

You can delete any irrelevent tracks and waypoints, then save it as a gpx format file.

Then you can upload it here.

You should be able to attach it like a photo. I'm pretty sure we have that file extension as an allowable upload. If not, let me know the extension and I'll add it.

Should work. You added that feature for me a couple years ago.
