Monday we left the LC ( log cabin ) in Colebrook and headed toward Kelsey Notch and met the Skibees groomer rolling 5 to a very smooth surface. I must say the changes to the first part of 5 south from the Peaks Motel will make that trail much easier to keep smooth. Kelsey Notch trail was as good as it gets, deep snow and all the trees bending over with snow. We took a left up the trail to Dixville Peak, which is now as wide as the interstate, and looking up we could see a wind turbine just poking through the fog - see pics. You can ride right up to one of the windmills -- they are gigantic. We went back down to 110 and somehow ended up off trail on old skidder tracks, the snow was deep and untracked for several miles until we turned around and headed up to the fire tower in Phillips Brook. We dropped down to 28 toward Nash Stream and turned off trail once more on a moose track and ended up at second Trio Pond. Onward on 28 to the Stream Road to Broken Dam Camp for a hot drink and blueberry muffin then back to the LC. Tuesday, it was off to Coleman State Park via 5 to Keith Hayes to the Park then 121 up toward Mugget Mountain for some off trail then past the Snack Shack and on to 20 east -- icy base with just a little cover, with no studs on the 146 track ice scratchers saved the sliders. Up 5 to 134 down and back on Tracy Brook and then another go at off trail on yet another long up hill moose track. Back on 134 all the way to the Balsams and back to the LC. Weds, trailer to the Balsams and headed up 134 to 112 at Robber's Roost to 143 and through the woods to land onto Parmachenee Rd and ride the lake to Bosebuck. Parmachenee Road to Rump Pond Rd then cross the river onto Canada Rd. for a couple of off trail loops and back to the link to the ungroomed ME section of 145. 144 to 20west at Tin Camp to 5 south to 134 back to the Balsams. Thursday, trailered to SDR and up and over Sugar Hill to 134 and Roaring Brook and another off trail moose track for untracked snow. We took a right into an old clear cut and climbed to the tree line then back down to 134 to the intersection of 20 and 5. We decided to do a Louis and Clark so we took a right off 5 north and headed into the woods. Our GPS showed us that if we went straight up and over the height of land we would hit an old road that would bring us back to 20 east about three miles past the 136 intersection. As we broke trail through the woods we came upon yellow paint markers on the trees, so we followed those and soon realized we were following the town line between Pittsburg and Clarksville!! When we left trail we were at 1550’ elevation and we climbed to 2695’ with a spectacular view of Lake Francis behind us. We did come out on a road and went right to meet 20 east. Lunch was to be at Bosebuck so it was 20 to 143 to the access road to Stub Hill and down the woods trail to 20 just before the Maine border. After lunch we took the lake to Big Brook and Parmachenee Road and back up the moose alley trail we had broken on Weds to a woods road and through a clear cut to Nelson Camp road. We turned around and back tracked to 143 and turned south to 112 all the way to Robber’s Roost. 18A to 134 up Sugar Hill and back to SDR to load up. Friday, It snowed, sleeted and rained Thursday night and at the LC we only picked up 2-3 inches of snow, BUT we had a report that Millsfield got 7 - 10 inches so it was off on 5 from the LC, gas up at the Peaks and up Kelsey Notch. From the 110 intersection all the way on the Millsfield Loop, Signal Mountain Trail, 13 mile woods trail, across 7 mile bridge to trail 114 to Milan we had first tracks on 7-10” of new snow on top of a smooth base -- can you say “HEAVENLY” 114 was thin to Milan, but going north from there on the power line was not to bad. Once off the power line we made our way back toward Millsfield pond on great trails leading to Newell Brook Rd. Once we were in Millsfield we rode many un groomed and un tracked ATV trails were I picked up a real nice shed. One of these ATV trail came to a dead end where a skidder trail continued into the woods. We looked at the GPS and it showed us that this trail would lead us to the Five Bridges Trail and after a lot of sweating and effort we made the final 300 yard off camber up hill climb to a final 45 degree pitch to the groomed trail. It was now dark so we headed back to Kelsey Notch and the final push back to the LC. For the week we had great riding and adventures and found two great sheds. Hyco, Grev, and Killer Bee -- feel free to add your comments and of course more of your pictures. In another week we will see if we can continue the exploration!!
