I'm on a search for a metric frame single phase (220V) 1h electric motor to replace for my band saw...

Unfortunately, metric frame motors ( 1 phase) are not the norm & the prices are insane.

I've found a lead on 1hp single phase (220V) BUT 50 HERTZ for soft money...

Will a 50 hertz motor run here in the US with 60 hertz ?

It will run, but if memory serves me, it will heat up which is bad for motors.

Depending on how crazy the cost is - many times you can adapt a normal motor by running a shaft adapter, or changing the pulley.

I know the owner at First Electric Motor Service and I am sure one of his guys could help you out with the motor or a work around. They do full rebuilding there as well so maybe that is an option.

Yes, a 50hz motor will run on 60hz, but it will run 20% faster. The metric frame at 60 hz is not common.

Wish it were that easy...Mine is 208V & 3 Phase. Installing 3 Phase power just isn't cost effective for 1 machine.

I can relate.
I run my home machine shop on a rotary phase converter.

Check grainger for a motor , also I believe they sell a electronic Phase convertor cheaper than a rotory phase converter. I believe a friend of mine paid around $250.00 and it will handle up to 5 hp.

So do I. I have 2 mills and 2 lathes that was built from an old 3 ph motor 7 hp and a pony motor that is 1/3 hp. The motor was bought at Brentwood machine 35 years ago for $5 a hp so 435 plus the pony motor I had so it has been running for a long time for $35.

no luck in 100% confirmation if a 50hertz motor will run on 60 hertz with out any long term issues ?

Other suggestions over the weekend....a military multi phase diesel generator to run the barn & the toys with in?

Major overkill...
Why not a retrofit to put a std. 60 hrtz motor in the bandsaw?

Unfortunately, the space constraints are tight...this machine was built around a sealed metric framed motor. If I can find an exact replacement metric motor I'm hoping to just bolt it in. If not, it looks like I will be disassembling the top from the bottom for access to re machine holes to mount the new motor.

Not sure if it's really overkill, but it was nice to go to the control panel on the boat & start up a 4 cylinder diesel generator to power everything when your out on the water.

Without knowing the load requirements and the maximum current rating (FLA) for the motor it will be hard to get 100% confirmation.
Generally, running a 50 cycle motor on 60 cycle power isn't a serious problem if the load can stand a 20% faster rotation. Running a 60 cycle motor on 50 cycle power is more likely to have issues with over-heating and heavy current draw.

Here's a pretty good explanation of it: http://www.eng-tips....qs.cfm?fid=1224

In your case they're saying if the load can take the 20% greater speed, try it, but measure the Full Load Amps (FLA) and if that number is under the motors rating you should be good.

thanks for the answer. It wasn't the answer I was hoping for, but it's the truth.
