Ouch, just watched the maine evening news and 3 people died this weekend on sleds. One through a lake and 2 into trees, all were wearing helmets. All in different locations as well. They also stated numerous accidents and that other 4 people were sent to the ER around the state with snowmobile related injuries. Yikes.....stay safe everyone!

It is critical to understand,,,,, there is not a "real base" coverage is not at depth, all the traction products in the world are not going to make your sled handle the SAME as when we have the "typical base",

riding is fine,, but do not expect the same cornering as when we have a 12' (or better) base

A very sad weekend

I wonder if speed will have anything to do with it and maybe a little rider inexperiance? Just guessing

I think it's the yearly sled fever, where the snow finally arrives and everyone goes out of their minds trying to ride. Happens EVERY year.

I jusy got back from a 2 day trip in pittsburg not as many up there as I had exspected. There seems to be a lot more rokkie drivers out the this year.I can say I have never in my 13 years and 40k plus miles have I seen so many riders in the middle of the trail when passing oncomeing sleds I think I think I might just have to replace my right ski soon at this rate. And lots of very slow trail hogs who need to learn to use there mirrors 15-20 mph on a wide open straight away in the middle of the trail is just asking for trouble. On the postive side not to many speed demons out there.A big thanks and hats off to prr sdr and errol crews with the amzoning job they have done with what litle snow there has been this year.

What do you consider a very slow trail hog,Someone that may have a family riding in front of him. That what you call a trail hog could be me. I was not in Pittsburg this weekend but when I do I ride in the rear with a big group and when someone comes out of nowhere and tries to pass me will not get by. If they pass me they have 20 people to pass also. And most of the nuts pass you in the corners and up hills not being able to see what is coming on the other side of the hill. 35 miles an hour is fast enough. If you want to go faster get on a big frozen lake and stay off the trails. And I am no rookie driver. I have been riding since 1966 so that theory of riders in the middle of the trails are rookies. I ride the rear in the middle of the trail to keep people like you that think you own the trails and to hell with everyone else from passing and possibly causing an accident with who I am riding with. Slow down and enjoy the ride.

Often these accidents involve people "From Away" who go to Maine for the weekend to let loose. Interesting that all three of these fatalities were locals, and they were all older riders (49 - 61).

A snowmobiler died this past weekend as well in Dudley MA. Apparently three friends went snowmobiling across a lake, and all three fell in. One got out on his own, the other two had to be rescued. One did not survive and was reportedly under for close to 15 minutes. Very sad indeed.

Be careful. Was just talking to a State Trooper earlier today and he said he kicked 4 Harvard Students off the Charles River in Boston yesterday for walking on the ice. Crazy!!!

Apparently it was a bad weekend for snowmobilers across the country. This link has stories from across the country.

Do you drive down the center of 93 doing 30mph as well? he said 15-20mph on a straight as an arrow trail, not 35 on a windy, uphill blind corner.

So you ride in the middle to keep those who think they own the trails and "to hell with everyone else"...sounds like you think you own the trails LOL Correct me if I am wrong, the speed limit is 45 right? But you think 35 is fast enough....Sorry just playing devil's advocate here. I don't care who you are, how long you have been riding, or for whatever reason, I would just prefer that everyone stay to the right and not ride in the midle of the trails....trying to prevent someone from passing ends up with both guys being pissed of and something bad more than likely happening....When I see someone come up in my rear view mirror I pull over when it's safe & let them pass, they go one their way and I contue on at a pace that I am comfortable at.....

LOL .....
I see that almost daily on Rt.2 heading into Cambridge every day !
there is a portion of Rt.2 that is 4 lanes wide and there is always some nutcase doing 10 to 15 mph
slower than the speed limit in the THIRD lane from the right. I just do not get it ?

Lets all remain civil here please.

RIP to ALL who died across North America on sleds. Tragic, and needless.
My heartfelt sympathies to all the families and friends.

On 93 I go 65 like everyone else and when I see someone coming a lot faster then 65 I pull up parallel with the guy in the right lane and continue on until I get to my exit. ALSO a windy, uphill blind corner is where I get passed not the straight as and arrow see for miles trail.

I own my side of the trail, the left side of the trail ir for on coming sleds not a passing lane. 45 is the speed limit but how many people do 45? All people need to do is follow the sled in front of you until the next intersection. People never pass "when it is safe"

uh oh, you might be the guy I had to follow for 20 minutes overheating my liquid cooled engine and smoking my belt because the folks in your group all run fans and go 15 mph. Try being courteous for a change.

People never pass "when it is safe"

Please REVISE that !
And i do not have a problem with what you say.
You are GENERALIZING and deserve any bashing that follows .... SORRY ...
Sledding since 1998 and have NEVER EVER passed when it was NOT SAFE !
And I have followed MANY an inconsiderant or just may be a NEWBIE to an intersection
and they keep sledding in a MUCH SLOWER rate than I would like ( and I mean BELOW
the NH speed limit ). I can POSSITIVLEY say I have NEVER been passed unsafely !
Why you may ask ? And your answer would be because i try to sled being aware at ALL TIMES
who is riding either comming at me or comming up from behind.
So you can see why sledders like myself may get PERTURBED at what you have posted.
Rob ......

Thats outragous and against the law. Left lane is for passing, not blocking. You will cause road rage, just a matter of time.
