Hey all, I have a house in Meredith, actually closer to Center Harbor. My question is this, does anyone know if the entire lake is safe for snowmobiles yet ? I know the inner harbors probably are, but I think someone mentioned the broads had just locked o the 8th ? So that will be only 6 days since that. I realize it can harden up anywhere from 1/2 to 2 inches per day according to all the research i have done. However I always wait for lots of tracks on the lake before venturing out. In addition, this year my son is 13 and I am going to let him ride my 1 up sled and myself and my 10 year old are on the 2 up.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

In addition, I am going to invest a couple hundred into an auger or some sort of drill to test the lake myself. Does anyone have any recommendations of what I should buy ?

Thanks again...

Derek

I overlook the Broads from Belknap Point in Gilford. This is always the last area to freeze.

I can never say if is is safe or not. No Bobhouses or fishermen to ask either. I can say that I didn't see any sleds at the Broads today but there were a few sleds on Paugus Bay. I was away from 12N to dark so if there was sled traffic, I would not have been able to see it later in the day.

If I see sled tracks on Friday, I'll be out. If those tracks suddenly disappear, I won't becuase I'll be calling Rescue.

Wish that I had more concrete info to share but I don't.

Just remember ice thickness on the big lake can vary greatly even within a couple hundred yards. Was once fishing just off shore at the mouth of Alton Bay,there was 8" 50 feet from shore,300' out it dropped to 3".Watch out for dock bubblers near shore and inlets to the lake where the water may be moving enough to keep the ice unsafe.Carry picks and remain aware.
