hi dualmass!!

they put a gate at the entrance and exit of the pool.salmons spend all summer there.it s to avoid poaching higher up on the river.

there was 533 salmons in the pool when i was there yesterday.the biggest one is 50 pounds.they are going to release them late september.they must jump a fall about 4 miles lower on the river.

Hornets of the meanest kind !!! ... they can build a nest that size in 4-7 days...

Hornets

Size: Up to 2 inches in size
Type: Social Wasp
Population: Have up to 700 members per nest.
US Region: Hornets are most popular in the north east region

Some hornets species can look similar to yellow jackets, but hornets are larger and thicker. Hornets are slightly less aggressive than yellow jackets and like most wasps, hornets can sting multiple times with a very strong painful sting. Hornets build warped ball shaped nests the size of a football or soccer ball in eaves, attics, and building, including bushes, trees. It’s generally considered unwise to try to remove a hornets’ nest without experience. While most hornet species are yellow and black, there are also white and black hornets.

My bee junky buddy says they're paper wasps, waiting for an answer from another bee guy.. Their almost entirely black and not all that large. I have no intention of touching it, although wifey wants to wait till winter, bag it up and give it to my daugther to bring to school... me, not so much, would kinda just like to leave it "bee" and go abouts me business...

It is possible it's a paper wasp, there are over 300 speice's ( variety of wasp alone )... but the size you said the nest was is pretty big...for a wasp. Not all hornet's have the long rear leg's you normally see in Summer time. There are varities of them also.
Had some in my pool area Last Year... and they were only about 1/2" long and looked like a bee ..except they were mostly black, with the whiteish stripe's and slender wings...

I checked with a friend of mine up at UMASS Extension to confirm it that the White Face Hornet is building these cool looking nests.
