Currently the temperature is 30F, light wind and light to moderate snow. 3" of new wet snow has fallen so far.

The trails northwest, north and east of town remain very good to at time excellent. The excellent being in the higher areas of 20 and 145, 143 where most snow had fallen the past few days. A few hundred feet of elevation change went from all snow to rain and this is what you will find as you ride the trails most to the northeast/east of town.

Back Lake area and south was in the rain for awhile Thursday night and warmer temperatures. Be aware of rocks, down limbs, and bare areas. Spring conditions exist south.

In town trails and the areas around the services unfortunately deteriorated yesterday afternoon as the temperatures climbed and the sun came out for a few hours. Pick your best way out of town for a few miles and things greatly improve.

Please note the trails are now in many cases spring conditions except up high, as I was out on Trail Patrol yesterday, I came across several riders who slid off the outside of corners in the slushy areas. A off trail adventure into the ditches usually puts you in waist high or deeper snow.

There is still lots of snow in the Great North Woods. Getting to the better snow you have to decide based on your location to best get out of town. Don't hestitate to ride with all the feet of snow still in the higher elevations

p.s. There is a lot of deep slush now on the lakes. Use caution

Trails were less than ideal today. Very slushy, very bumpy and quite a few thin/bare areas. The groomers did not have a chance to go out the last few days due to the warm weather.

FYI....

I am just off the phone with a contact/friend in Pittsburg (10pm Sat - 2/27). I am glad I didn't drive the 400 miles / 25 gallons of gas multiplied 2X. ($$$) He described a MESS. He suggested if we come that we trailer to East Inlet / Rt 3 and ride outside / off the trails in the rough as the trails are in the dumps/ moguled up.

Anything near the services is bear bones. He described the trails to and from the service area (Youngs/Dormans/Pittsburg Village) as a gravel road. Late spring conditions at best.

Despite receiving 3" of fresh powder today, he described the sun as being up high and the days longer which is eating up the snow. He added that none of the clubs are grooming as it has been to warm.

One rider told him he ate a 1/4 tank of gas crossing Lake Francis because of the deep slush. YUK.

Think colder weather and more snow.

That pretty much does describe Saturday in this area. The snow did not accumulate to anything despite snowing most of the day.

Things went downhill quickly in only a day or two. The high areas do have a lot of snow. Just getting there was very rough yesterday.

Hi John,

Thank you very much for taking over the trail reporting. :good: The grand-babies where here and I did not have any time to get out on the trails this weekend. The dooryard is completely flat. There are Z-120 tracks everywhere. :yahoo:

The steak feed last night was great and there were plenty of hungry snowmobilers in attendance. :clapping:

The groomers went out last night at 1 AM and most of the trails have been groomed. They didn't get back until late this morning.

I will be going out tomorrow morning to check things out. I expect that the trails will be groomed again tonight since the forecast temperatures are supposed to be below freezing.

Mark, I formally turn over the reporting back to you! Maybe things will improve over what I had to report which started good but did not end as good.
