I am heading to Moosehead lake the week after next, and want to be sure I am comfortable and warm. Thoughts on best helmet, and other gear?

Check this post out.

Also, I have a pair of LaCrosse Ice King boots. They are rated for -140 degrees F and are the warmest boots I have ever had. I NEVER have cold feet. :good:

I heard that Choko is very warm gear, here is a link to QR.com to a thread with feedback from people who uses it.

My experience with gear has left me with a few companies worthy of the money. You cant go wrong with Klim outerwear. For helmets, the new Modular 2 Helmet is decent but the BVS 2 is the ultimate, its quiet and warm inside and I think the breathing system is a better design. Klim makes a decent boot but ive also had great experiences with Altimate boots. FXR makes a great outfit as far as looks, durability, and fit but its not the warmest. Choko makes very warm gear and at a more marketable price than others, however their jackets tend to fit big and heavy, so make sure you try on everything you see. I believe pants are key to a good day of cold riding. Bibs are a good idea. For pants I would check into Klim and Arctiva. For warmup jackets and trenchcoat style jackets go with Arctiva and get one with a hood for hanging out. Ski-doo makes a good balaclava with a vented nose cover. Gloves are a toss up, personally I dont think leather is warmer than other types. Trial and error with gloves. I have a pair of FXR backshift gloves and they are very warm. Hope that helps.
If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got, and then one day you’ll find yourself in second place. Stay focused.

BV2S :good: Warmest helmet I have had. My Klim Adrenaline boots very happy with and never cold. I have had problems with some boots with my feet sweating and getting cold but not with the Klim's. I also switched to Klim Klimate gloves this year and pretty happy with those. I am starting to move to all Klim slowly - Klimate jacket next.

I think what is important in cold weather is the quality of your base layers. I have found a quality made tech or silk weight base layer then depending on the temp a medium or heavy weight second layer. Then my jacket. I use all Polartec underlayers.

I have 4 or 5 helmets, and the best one I have by far is a HJC CL-15. Electric Shield is not really needed, but I have one. I use it year round. Bikes, atvs, and sleds. just 3 different shields.

I just ordered a pair of Cabella gloves. They were highly recommended from DOOTALK. They are a gauntlet type.

I just went to the ski-doo website and see that there are two bv2s, one is called "surge". One is $499 and the other is $549. Yikes - five hundred bucks for a helmet? It better be good!!!! :) Are they available for lower prices anywhere??

Yep, that's about right. It's worth it believe me. Try Rob, I'm sure with the money you spent last year you should get a little break.

Phil is one of the owners. Bob his brother is the other owner and comes up to Back Lake quite a bit. I have to say I did buy the electric shield for mine, I installed it and never plugged it in. IMO the electric shield is not needed.

Ditto on the HJC helmets. I also have a HJC CL-15. Very warm, low to zero fogging even in riding during storms with lots of moisture in the air. I wear arctiva bibs that are just AWESOME with multiple adjustments. I wear a SkiDoo jacket, long and warm. The base layer is VITAL and as important or more important than the outerlayers.

For the $ you can't get better than HJC helmets. All 3 of my motorcycle helmets are also HJC.

You are correct, I talked to Rob today, I mean yesterday, (didn't realize how late it was) and he no longer carries them.

Best piece of gear I've purchased for riding in sub zero temps, is a tall windshield.
