HANCOCK, N.H. -- A driver jumped from his pickup truck as it fell through thin ice Saturday in Hancock.
Fishermen said they warned the man before he started driving onto Nubanusit Lake, WMUR News 9's Aaron Kellogg reported.
The driver, identified as Daniel Traffie, 64, walked away uninjured and dry from his pickup truck that was swallowed by the icy water.
"There were guys at the launch who told him it's not wise to be coming out here," said Don Schrock, a witness. "You just heard the initial crunch, you know, the front end going through, and you could visually see the thing start going."
He made it a few feet onto the ice when a tire broke through the ice near the shore, but the driver kept going until the ice broke completely.
"The front end dipped and headed straight for the bottom," said John Anderson, of Rindge.
Fishermen who witnessed the incident rushed to a bob house, afraid that it would also sink below ice in the section that's 8 inches thick after freezing two weeks ago.
"This side was approximately 10 acres or so of open water," Schrock said.
Police said the driver is responsible for pulling the truck out onto the ice and that he'll need to bring a tow truck to the shore and use cables to drag his truck off the bottom.
"It's just way too early in the season to be even thinking about doing anything like that," Schrock said.
Police said officers were called to a similar, but much more complicated situation on the same lake about two years ago when a truck broke through the ice. Then, the tow truck that came to rescue it also broke through.
People said the man whose trunk sunk Saturday was bringing coffee to his friends on the lake.

That lake is scary. I have seen cars go in when there is 2' of ice on some sections of the lake. There are ALOT of springs, high O2 levels and some current.
That lake is GIN CLEAR. It is a wonderful body of water. It is a shame hairlips keep going in. Great fishing, just keep the trucks off it.

Not to mention there are 3 or 4 bald eagle nests on that lake! I used to live in Keene and had a buddy with a place on that lake. We saw eagles every time we went.

Nubie can be a very unforgiving lake... like others have said currents, springs are all over the place. Living about 15 minutes from the lake I remember when the tow truck and the other two trucks went and there was good ice that year too, but then again where they went through I wouldn't have been on that part with a truck
